The Story Behind Rugali Washing Station

Nestled in the rolling hills of Rwanda's Nyamasheke district, the Rugali Washing Station has quickly established itself as one of the country's leading producers of specialty coffee. Founded in 2016, the station has grown into one of the largest in the region, working with around 1,150 smallholder farmers who cultivate coffee across the surrounding hillsides.

Situated between 1,550 and 1,800 metres above sea level, the cool mountain climate and fertile soils provide ideal conditions for growing exceptional Red Bourbon coffee. Each harvest, carefully selected cherries are delivered to the washing station, where quality is prioritised at every stage of processing.

This microlot is produced using the natural process, allowing the coffee cherries to dry with the fruit intact before the beans are removed. The result is a coffee with remarkable sweetness, a silky body and vibrant fruit character, while still retaining the clarity and elegance for which Rwandan coffees are celebrated.

In the cup, expect a bright and refined coffee with notes of green apple, pineapple, juicy stone fruit and delicate florals, finishing with a smooth, lingering sweetness. It's a wonderful example of Rwanda's growing reputation for producing some of Africa's most exciting specialty coffees.
