Tasting notes
Well-balanced mix of pear and butter with nice acidity. Toffee apple, raisins, lemon, peach tea, and hints of plum add complexity.
La Esperanza, meaning The Hope in Spanish, is a fully washed Strictly Hard Bean (SHB) grade coffee grown by one of the most innovative coffee producers based in Jinotega, North Central Nicaragua. The carefully hand-picked coffee cherries are delivered at the farm’s wet mill for weighing and depulping. After a controlled fermentation period of about 18 hours, the coffee is washed and prepared for sun drying on the raised beds for a couple of weeks to reach optimal moisture level. The dedication and passion of the pickers and entire team in the wet mill and drying process guarantees an exceptional cup quality.
The farm is owned by Henry and Gaby Hueck, and we have the pleasure of meeting them to understand more about the farm and the community surrounding it. With your support, they offer a wide range of employee benefits, from free housing, to clean and easily available drinking water, three prepared meals a day, medical care and free schooling and computers for the children of workers and neighbouring communities.
We are particularly passionate about education and gender equality, which is why we are thrilled to partner with the Huecks, who resonate with us on these aspects. All farms practice non-discrimination, with programs in place to support the female employees. Employees are paid every 15 days and in cash, and the trained group of pickers chosen to pick this particular coffee are given double the minimal wage, rewarding their skill level and their care for the environment.
Together with the Huecks, we want to create an environment that both betters the farm and the people, and in so doing show that coffee farming can be productive in a sustainable way, benefiting the whole community with an improved quality of life.
While we continue to buy ethical and sustainable coffee, with your support for the Nicaragua La Esperanza, we will be focusing the proceeds on key initiatives together with the farm owners.
